From modern & contemporary furniture, art and antiquities at the Park Avenue Armory fairs, the whimsical and fresh designs to be had at the MOMA stores, to the exuberant atmosphere at the various auction houses week after week, this town is truly a shopper’s paradise for interior designers, art connoisseurs, collectors, and fashionable patriots for the arts & crafts.
But as you shop, remember buying design is different from buying art…

I’m A Fan

Adrienne Moumin’s Epic Collages
New York-based artist Adrienne calls her handmade photo collages “Architextures”. They are fragments of what we see all around us – bigger than life skyscrapers that became synonymous for this city of steel. Her work is a combination of her lifelong involvement with both silver-based photography and collage, as discrete and separate practices. Architextures is also a combination of hand-printed B&W photographs with cut-and assembled handwork.
While I was at her studio last month, I noticed that at first, her works appeared to be digital montages, but upon closer inspection they revealed a texture and layering inherent in the handmade pieces. While you’re looking at these images on the screen everything appeared 2-D, but seeing them up-close will bring these multiple buildings alive, and your eyes will most likely be drawn to follow their hypnotic forms. As a modernist, I admired her work a great deal. Partly because of their originality, but mostly because Adrienne Moumin is following the path of such contemporary artists like: Dinh Q. Le, Ray K. Metzker, John Stezaker, and Annette Messager.

ROYAL RED & BLUE

Sotheby’s achieved their highest Contemporary Art Evening Sale by tallying $375,149,000 the best auction result in any category in the Company’s history. Mark Rothko’s No. 1: the majestic canvas lead the way with a final bid of $75 Million. Royal Red and Blue was one of eight works hand-selected by Rothko for his landmark solo show of the same year at the Art Institute of Chicago. Measuring 1133⁄4 x 671⁄2 in (288.9 x 171.5 cm), No.1 (Royal Red and Blue) has remained in the same collection for 30 years.

Overall, this was the highest auction total in Sotheby’s history. New artist records for: Jackson Pollock, Franz Kline, Hans Hofmann, Arshile Gorky, Robert Motherwell, Wade Guyton, as well as for a work-on-paper by Andy Warhol and a painting by Takashi Murakami. Note: The previous record for a Sotheby’s auction was the May 2008 Contemporary Art Evening Sale which totaled $362,037,000.

Jean Arp: A COLLECTION OF WOOD RELIEFS AND COLLAGES
In keeping with the art theme for this week, allow me to introduce to you the talented works of Jean Arp. His reliefs and collages are the subject of a major exhibit at Blain|Di Donna, a gallery located inside the Carlyle Hotel on Madison Avenue. Since its opening late last year, the gallery has been THE destination for serious art lovers and collectors. Jean Arp, A Collection of Wood Reliefs and Collages, will be on view starting today, November 1st until Tuesday, December 11th, 2012. The core of this whimsical and colorful exhibition is a collection of unique painted wood reliefs and collages coming on public view for the first time in America.
This group of works by the artist, demonstrates the importance of the interplay between form and color, as well as the developmental nature of the works’ physicality–from the streamlined surfaces of his paper collages to the heightened sculptural dimensionality of the wood reliefs.

Arp’s forms are amoebic, embryonic, and referential of natural organisms. The “moving oval,” (you simply have to see it in person, it’s gorgeous!) so evident in these works, was the basic form that the artist referred to throughout his oeuvre, and which he never relinquished. The colors are vivid and joyous. Arp’s ambition was to harmonize man and nature and he used his art as a vehicle to achieve this. He aimed to create art as nature creates life, and his collages and reliefs employed a fittingly biomorphic vocabulary.

Arp and the print publisher Louis Broder collaborated on many projects and publications, beginning in 1957. Their most ambitious was an album published in 1966 titled Le Soleil recerlé (The Re-circled or Re-ringed Sun). Arp created the paper collages in this exhibition as a prerequisite for this publication’s prints and then created the unique painted wooden reliefs on view. Therefore, each medium informs the other directly, forging their interdependence; spatial tensions result from their oscillating relationship between flatness and depth, light and dark. Rich cultural venues drive the wealth of museum openings to keep New Yorkers and tourists busy in the world’s most fascinating city, fueling inspiration on a broad scale from historical to modern. Here’s the scoop!!! 
CROSSING BORDERS: Manuscripts from the Bodleian Libraries. For a rare glimpse into antiquity when books were unique works of art as well as repositories of knowledge, head uptown to The Jewish Museum for Crossing Borders, the meeting place of medieval cultures, where illuminated manuscripts from England’s Bodleian Library, established by Thomas Bodley in 1602 are on display. Renowned for its great treasures, this exhibition features over 60 works, Hebrew, Arabic and Latin manuscripts, the majority of which have never been seen in the United States including the splendid Kennicott Bible, the most lavishly illuminated Hebrew Bible to survive from medieval Spain.

DURER TO de KOONING: 100 Master Drawings from Munich marks the first time such a comprehensive and prestigious selection of works has been lent to a single exhibition. The Morgan Library & Museum hosts an extraordinary exhibition of rarely-seen master drawings from the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung, Munich, one of Europe’s most distinguished drawings collections. Durer to de Kooning occupies the Morgan’s principal galleries containing more than 60 Italian, German, Dutch, French drawings of the 15th through the 19th centuries with celebrated artists Rubens, Michelangelo, Rembrandt and Titian while the second gallery features late-nineteenth-century and modern contemporary works. FAKING IT: Manipulated Photography Before Photoshop While digital photography and image editing software have brought about an increased awareness of the degree to which camera images can be manipulated, the practice of doctoring photographs has existed since the medium was invent. Featuring some 200 visually captivating photographs created between the 1840s and 1990s in the service of art, politics news, entertainment and commerce, this exhibition offers a provocative new perspective on the history of photography. The photographs in the exhibition were altered using a variety of techniques including multiple exposure, photomontage, over painting and retouching on the negative or print. A Glamorous Past

Now that Fashion Week is slowly coming to an end, let’s rendez-vous at Bernheimer Fine Art Photography and Trinity house Paintings. Here’s why. This season most fashionable art exhibition will take center stage from September 13th until the 29th. The show highlights Beauty Endures: Studies of Glamour and Intrigue. This show is a collaboration between Bernheimer Fine Art Photography and Trinity House Paintings. It brings together the work of painter Paul César Helleum and fashion photographer Cathleen Naundorf for a special exhibition dedicated to two elements which this city is well-known for: glamour and fashion. The collection of works on paper and photography, spanned over 100 years of haute couture, and it celebrates beauty, glamour and all things fabulous from two of the western world’s most captivating artists. The hyperrealist movement

We can all safely agree that art is uniquely a personal choice which creates a lot of emotions. When I first came across the works of Brooklyn-based artist Victor Rodriquez, my emotions ran high. In a good way. Victor Rodriguez‘ credentials in the art world has been rising for a number of years, especially because he’s been highly regarded as a pioneering figure in the new hyperrealist movement.

Major institutions such as Art San Diego, the Museum of Contemporary, Art Flint Institute of Contemporary Arts, and Museo de Monterrey have carried his work. And now, the 40 year old artist who was born in Mexico is set to debut his latest exhibition called Black Dodecahedron at Sebastian & Barquet tomorrow, Thursday, September 6, 2012. The show will run until Friday, October 5th. S+B is located at 601 West 26th Street #300, NYC.

In his latest series Victor Rodriguez repaints his pieces multiple times exploring the way our perception of memories change over time. He does this by utilizing techniques of photorealism to evoke the transformation of the past and present. Black Dodecahendron, a collection of monumental-sized paintings, strays from his former work by demonstrating a scarcity of an intense color palette and dramatic pyrotechnics by employing black geometric figures.

The Ahae experience continues. Following the opening of the Ahae De Ma Fenêtre at the Louvre Pavilion at the Jardin des Tuileries in June, a memorable concert was held on July 4th.

A review followed: Under clearing skies on a warm July 4th evening in Paris’s Tuileries Garden, the famed Orchestra Lamoureux played a concert of French classics and new compositions while two enormous screens showed images by Ahae, the Korean-born photographer whose exhibition De ma fenêtre (From My Window) is currently on view in the Louvre’s garden. Pieces by Debussy, Saint-Saens and Offenbach were played on a stage specially built for the concert. Ilan Eshkeri’s De ma fenêtre was given its world premiere to generous applause.

From My Window is an exceptional show of photographs taken from the vantage of just one window in Ahae’s house. The landscape, photographed throughout the year, reveals the subtle changes of the seasons as well as a great sensibility to life in all its forms. Painstakingly photographed and printed, the show is already a popular success. Revealing a tranquil sensibility in the midst of the chaos of nature, it features some of the largest reproductions ever mounted.

Sold in the Ahae Pavilion bookstore is the new Assouline collector’s title, AHAE: Through My Window. Scenes pastoral and comic, dramatic and tragic, dynamic and serene, enchanting and breathtakingly beautiful are revealed through his lens. With introductions by the director of the Louvre, the former director of Prague’s National Gallery, and the director of the Institute of Contemporary Art in Moscow, and featuring poetic texts by the photographer, this beautiful hardcover volume of inspiring imagery is presented in a luxury slipcase (available August 14th, $200, through Assouline). The exhibits ends on Sunday, August 19th, 2012.

LEGENDS OF LA CIENEGA
On Wednesday, May 9th, acclaimed interior furnishings company Rose Tarlow Melrose House hosted the VIP cocktail party that officially commenced the La Cienega Design Quarter’s 4th Annual LEGENDS of La Cienega.
The opening event historically draws notables across categories and offers the design community an opportunity to gatherin celebration of the Los Angeles design scene, of which the LaCienega Design Quarter is the heart. Last night’s event reflected the “Windows to the World” theme with globally inspired catering by Taste that referenced the featured countries of the windows.

SAKE TASTING at BERNARDAUD
Bernardaud welcomed 150 guests to its flagship boutique on Park Avenue for a unique Sake Tasting reception on Wednesday, May 9th. Four kuramotos ot house masters from four of the most venerable sake breweries in Japan – Urakasumi, Sudohonke, Masumi, and Masuizumi. The four masters offered samples of their products, the fruits of centuries-honored brewing techniques, that were accompanied by unexpected food pairings of French cuisine (such as duck breast and pate) during the cross-cultural gastronomic event. Guests savored the various sakes in a Bernardaud Anno cup that was designed by architect Sylvain Dubuisson. The Sudohonke brewery boasts a legacy of 55 generations of family ownership. Many of Japan’s breweries have been severely impacted by the 2011 tsunami and earthquake.

PARTICLES + WAVES at ILIAD
Cornelia Thomsen at the the opening reception of Particles + Waves, which is a curated group exhibition at Iliad Gallery located at East 57th Street. The exhibition presents a group of twelve artists whose work resonates with quantum theory, the perplexities of the subatomic world, and various interpretations of the “observer-dependent universe” through visual metaphors presenting the paradox of particle/wave duality as a modern day parable. Featuring provocative works by Cair Crawford, Karen Gunderson, Alice Hope, Ron Kingswood, Kari Lindstrom, Nefeli Massia, Norman Mooney, Svetlana Rabey, Taney Roniger, Rhonda Smith, Cornelia Thomsen and Andrea Zemel, the exhibition will include a rich variety of artistic media in a broad range of 2D and sculptural works.

SPRING SHOW NYC 2012Earlier this month, at the Park Avenue Armory, astute organizers of art and antique fairs pursued a dual mission by appealing to museum professionals, seasoned buyers, and welcomed neophytes. No art and antiques fair anywhere in the world fulfilled those two goals with more aplomb than the Spring Show NYC, which opened on May 3rd and ran through May 6th. There, in a hospitable, non-intimidating setting, fair goers of all backgrounds were comfortably united in awe and appreciation of the wide range of the fair’s offerings.

Born in Connecticut in 1961, Johnny Swing lives and works in rural Vermont, though set up his first studio in 1986 in an abandoned gas station on the corner of 2nd street and Avenue B on New York’s Lower East Side. Space 2B served as both workshop and showcase for his and other artists and designers work, and was the venue for his initial experiments with repurposed found objects and furniture. Central to his practice is the importance of his materials, exposing their inherent nature with a witty detachment from their intended utility. Nothing is taken at face value.

The opening reception for the spellbinding photographs of Todd Burris will take place on Wednesday, May 9th, from 5:30-8:30pm at the Robin Rice Gallery. The exhibition will be at the gallery until June 17th. This is the second collaboration between the artist and Robin Rice, so expect to see a series of beautiful photography which are like a visual dance of contractions. “Fashion is instant language,” Miuccia Prada has said. That gives curators Harold Koda andAndrew Bolton plenty of material for the conversations they’ll imagine between Prada and Elsa Schiaparelli (1890–1973) for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s 2012 Costume Institute exhibition. Opening in May, “Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada: On Fashion” will explore the affinities between the two Italian designers from different eras. “Given the role Surrealism and other art movements play in the designs of both Schiaparelli and Prada, it seems only fitting that their inventive creations be explored here at the Met,” said museum director Thomas Campbell in a statement announcing the exhibition. “Schiaparelli’s collaborations with Dalí and Cocteau as well as Prada’s current Fondazione Prada push art and fashion ever closer, in a direct, synergistic, and culturally redefining relationship.” From Media Bistro.
