    Maggie Norris Couture
In the heels of a post Mercedes Benz Fashion Week closing party last week, I caught up with Maggie Norris at her atelier in midtown Manhattan. The veteran fashion designer was excited to reveal her latest projects, one of them being the launch of a mid-20th century sunglasses collection. Maggie was once a fashion designer at Ralph Lauren, but has since become the go-to designer to a host of celebrities, such as Nicole Kidman, Naomi Watts, Diane Keaton, Grace Hightower De Niro, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Halle Berry, Andie MacDowell, and first lady Michelle Obama.

Discovered Art Treasures at The Fuller Building!

/ Comments Off on Discovered Art Treasures at The Fuller Building!
Lost and Found: The Pinajian Discovery at Antiquorum located on the 5th floor of the Fuller Building
    Now through March 10, 2013

    Master of Abstraction Discovered

The Pinajian Discovered exhibit is comprised of 36 paintings, both in oil on canvas and watercolors, by an artist whose spectacular body of art work was almost lost to the world at one point. You see, Pinajian left strict instructions for his collection to be cast aside in the town dumpster once he passed away. And now, there is an exhibit at Antiquorum, located in the Fuller building, which is a spectacular eye opener of the works of the Armenian American artist, Arthur Pinajian (1914–1999). The show is a treat and a great joy for art lovers, not only because of the masterful art works, but also because the artist’s paintings would not have seen the light of day if outside intervention did not play its hand.
In the final scheme of things, thanks to art historian Peter Hastings Falk, founder of Rediscovered Masters,  and author of Master of Abstraction, who discovered Arthur’s works in 2007, now you too can take an extraordinary journey through the world of an American artist whose rare and valuable abstract paintings have certainly left a lasting significance in the canon of art history. The gallery’s public viewing are: Tuesday-Saturday 11:30am – 5:30pm or by appointment, contact pinajianart@optimum.net.

“My own work goes on. I have finally come to the conclusion that I have some talent, though there are always some doubts, and I am trying to work in the direction where I think it lies… My oils gave off a studied heavy look. I was probably too serious in my painting, thinking it was a technique rather than a creative act. My interest in illustration may have fostered that idea, my admiration of Ben Stahl and others, I am over that and have drifted in my own boat out into the lake and thrown away the oars. There is no coming back. I must find my own way… If this sounds familiar it is because I am still looking.” – Arthur Pinajian

    at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week

For his Fall 2013 Collection, Zang Toi took his fashion devotes to a gentler time in Imperial Russia, when the age of elegance was the order of the day. This move was quite in step with a designer who is well known for his theatrics on the runway. Ans so his fall collection delivered without fail.

The Mercedes Benz Fashion Week is officially over as of yesterday afternoon. And as I reflect on the various shows that I attended, I can easily say that the results were more than satisfying. The fur trend was surprisingly present, virtually at every show. It was even spotted at the main lobby and various VIP lounges at the venue. I say surprisingly present, because we’re all aware of the negative stigma it often brings. In a time of economic recovery, it seems that the designers’ minds were squarely on comfort, the fondness and appeal of historical references, social awareness and the cultural differences which effect us all. “The look” from Carolina Herrera, Tracy Reese, Zang Toi, Veneziana, Concept Korea, Vantam Tokyo was elegant, bold, at times supple, and certainly inviting.

A Review of the Vera Wang Fall 2013 Collection

/ Comments Off on A Review of the Vera Wang Fall 2013 Collection
    Vera Wang Fall 2013 Collection

There was a time when period clothing was all the rage and the construction, shape, and volume of a garment was all that matters. For her Fall 2013 Collection, Vera Wang brought that period to the fore, and made it work to her advantage by adding romance and some much needed attitude to a collection that honored the past, and at the same time is strikingly forward looking.

Despite her known interest for designing clothes with a subdued but fresh outlook, this collection emphasised her Asian fusion theme, and the fact that she has a real command of color and a flair for the unique and sympathetic side of fashion. Stay tuned for the following reviews on my blog in the next few days:Carolina Herrera, Tracy Reese, Zang Toi, and Concept Korea.

Proenza Schouler – When Fashion meets Design

/ Comments Off on Proenza Schouler – When Fashion meets Design
Proenza Schouler textile collection for Knoll Luxe
Being that we’re at the very end of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, I thought I’d pause a bit from all the fashion coverage, and re-introduce a subjet which I deal with on a daily basis – design. The dynamic fashion duo Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, of Proenza Schouler have teamed up with the iconic design company Knoll, in order to produce some of the most fashion forward fabrics for any home decor.

By the way, Proenza Schouler will launch their Fall 2013 collection today at  8PM EST. Be sure to visit their official website later in order to watch the video. As I mentioned previously, Knoll has been working with Proenza Schouler for over a year to translate runway fabrics into those that will meet the rigorous requirements of interior use. All are based on existing fabrics as seen on the runway and have a palette distinctly driven by Proenza Schouler that includes clean neutrals with punches of rich, dramatic colors such as royal purple and deep berry. The overall result is highly innovative line that you can introduce to your home by hiring an interior designer to make it happen. What could be more simple?

‘Wan Sui’ (long live) POP CULTURE OBAMA printed silk/cotton faille shift dress
    Vivienne Tam Fall 2013
Images of President Obama, Maoe’s writings, mass media and popular culture were seen on a simple yet exciting “pop art” collection from Vivienne Tam this past Sunday evening. Models strut their stuff to the sound of Madonna’s Truth or Dare, while celebrating the Year of The Snake with style. Despite the red background and at times, splashes of color that were seen on the clothes, there was something quite tame about the overall collection.
This in itself is not necessarily a bad thing. The Fall/Winter 2013 collection from Vivienne Tam comprised of fabrics such as silk, wool melton, leather, hi-tech synthetics, boucle and houndstooth. All popular materials for day to day living. The feel of the collection was very much in tune with Pop Art, and had a common thread which cultured, and everyday people can easily identify with.

    Kati Stern VENEXIANA Autumn 2013

Venexiana’s opening show at the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week was so dramatic, that for a moment I thought I was in for a night on Broadway. The look was romantic, glamorous, classic, and overall exhilarating. I understand from talking with a fashion editor at Harper’s Bazaar that she now has an exclusive license to sell fur. And so while watching the ‘défilé de mannequins’ it became quite obvious that she used that license to the full.

Black imported faux pants with black and teal tinted fox, amethyst metallic lace evening gown, silk taffeta evening dress with black and violet fox fur, full assembled fur coats were seen in abundance. Kati Stern put on a haute and glamorous show for the woman who is confident, independent, fashion forward, and who wants to encourage the fur trends that were seen throughout the various shows at the uber chic New York Fashion Week.

Leather and furs, and a little touch of Bohemia. The Fall 2013 Collection of BCBGMAXAZRIA took off on a high note yesterday at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. Models walked the runway to the sounds of exotic Arabian music while profiling a collection that was supple, sleek, sexy and very much in touch with the modern world.
